On The Hour: revisiting a brilliant radio comedy Armando Iannucci & Chris Morris’ BBC Radio 4 news spoof not only gave rise to Alan Partridge but also launched countless comedy careers.

From the British newspaper The Daily Telegraph, 08 May 2012.

My heroes and heroines: Rebecca Front
The actress and comedian on the people who have most inspired her

Rebecca Front

Dame Judi Dench

It’s hard not to admire her. She is gracious and charming, and incredibly beautiful without being Botoxed up to the eyeballs. And she seems to wear her success incredibly lightly – like it’s just a day job and no big deal.

Alec Guinness

He inspired me to be an actor. Every time I saw him perform he blended in and, in my mind, that’s what great acting is about. I don’t want to be able to tell that someone’s performing. I want it to look like the real thing

Armando Iannucci

I’ve worked with the comedian and creator of The Thick of It for about 20 years. What I admire most about him is that his comedy comes from a place of decency. It’s satire with a good intent. He’s also intellectually rigorous and very uncompromising.

Joe Meltzer

My school English teacher inspired me to read and question more. He was a maverick who hated syllabuses; he said that education came from the Latin “to draw out” and that he wanted to draw things out of us instead of hammering things in.

Emmeline Pankhurst

I have admired the suffragettes since I was a kid. It comes down to determination. They had every indignity heaped on them but never gave up because they knew they were in the right.

That’s all for this week. Hopefully next week I will be posting the art, music and literary references of the episode ‘Last Bus to Woodstock’. Until then, take care everyone. xoxoxoxoxo

  1. I so love these (well, really all) posts. Thanks, as always, for all the good work you do. What do you think the Laurence Fox shot was?
