———————————–

Hello everyone and welcome to a new post. In this post I will be looking at the changing furniture, decor, paintings etc from the first episode, The Dead of Jericho to the final episode, The Remorseful Day. in this first of two posts I will be looking episodes one (Dead of Jericho) to episode 16 (Second Time Around). Let’s get started.

The Dead of Jericho.

In this episode we get a good look at Morse’s living room from the three scenes in Morse’s flat/house.

The Silent World of Nicholas Quinn.

Here we have our first difference from the Dead of Jericho episode.

As you can see above there is no picture on the wall behind Strange in The Dead of Jericho episode but in the Silent World of Nicholas Quinn in front of Lewis there is a picture. The drinks cabinet is also fuller in the Silent World episode.

Service of All the Dead.

Only one scene in Morse’s flat. But it does show a difference from the previous episode.

Morse enters his living room. Behind him is the drinks cabinet. However, the picture that we saw in the Nicholas Quinn episode (below) has gone.

Strangely, if you look behind Lewis in the screenshot below from Service of all the Dead we can see a picture hook.

The Wolvercote Tongue.

The picture is back.

This clock is on the mantlepiece.

This table, above, is a new piece of furniture not seen in previous episodes.

Last Seen Wearing.

The green lamp, which was on the occasional table in the previous episode, has now moved to the desk. Two new grand ornaments, one a lamp, are now seen on the occasional table.

Settling of the Sun.

The occasional table is still in its place but the lamp that was on the table in the previous episode has disappeared.

Morse has now acquired a coffee table in front of the settee. Also in the above picture an ornament has disappeared from the mantlepiece in the background. It was seen on the mantlepiece in The Dead of Jericho (see below).

A chair has now made an appearance. It wasn’t there before.

Last Bus to Woodstock.

The little horse ornament on the mantlepiece has moved from the left hand side to the right where it was seen in The Dead of Jericho (see below).

Morse’s book and music LPs shelf looked fuller in The Dead of Jericho (see pic below).

This Picasso like painting is new. It’s adjacent to the drinks table. Not seen previously (see pic below).

Ghost in the Machine.

No scenes in Morse’s flat/house.

The Last Enemy

The chess set is normally behind the settee, next to the window.

The coffee table has disappeared again.

The lamp behind Morse used to be on the occasional table near the front window (see pic below).

Deceived By Flight.

The chair has now moved away from the wall and towards the fireplace as was seen in The Dead of Jericho (see pic below with Strange). The lamp is also a different kind as to what was seen in the previous episodes (see pic below with Morse). The lamp we now see above is very like the one seen below next to Strange.

A new ornament has appeared on the table.

The Secret of Bay 5B.

The coffee table has reappeared.

The green lamp is now over next to the record player sideboard.

The print on the wall is different from what was shown previously (see pic below).

Below, to the right of Lewis we see a very different picture to what has been seen before (see pic below).

I haven’t seen the little mug next to the lamp before. The lamp was previously seen on the table with the chess set in Deceived by Flight.

The Infernal Serpent.

The two pictures on the wall have changed. Previously, in the Dead of Jericho episode they were paintings of buildings, (see pic below).

Morse now has his phone in the living room while in previous episodes it was in the hall. There is also now a picture above the sideboard behind Morse. There was not one in previous episodes.

The horse ornament has now moved back to the left of the mantlepiece. There is also a postcard stuck into the frame of the picture.

The circled item is new. Is it a clock or a trophy? Also note that the wooden clock is different. It is now a type of propeller clock while previously it wasn’t.

The mantlepiece has become cluttered with new items.

The bookcase in the background has different items from previous episodes. In particular, there were yellow boxes/files/CD boxsets on the top shelf (see pic below).

Behind Morse is usually the drinks cabinet but it looks to have changed. Also the edge of the picture we can see on the left is different from before (see pic below). Also, there is now a lamp on the sideboard/drinks cabinet. The picture behind Morse also looks smaller than the previous on (see pic below).

Morse is scanning the holiday brochure on the floor. The coffee table appears to have gone that was seen in the episode, The Settling of the Sun.

Sins of the Fathers.

A painting adjacent to sideboard with the record player has disappeared (see pic below).

A large object has also appeared (see pic above). I’m not sure what it is.

Here is a closer picture, below, of that ‘large object.’ Still not sure what it is. Answers in the comments please.

Also two other objects have appeared on the occasional table (see pic below).

Salt and pepper mills?

Morse has obtained a silver tray for his drinks.

Driven to Distraction.

No scenes in Morse’s flat/house.

Masonic Mysteries.

This is the only episode where we see that Morse lives in a house not a flat. However, the stairs where never seen before even though we saw the hall quite often.

I haven’t noticed this lamp before. It’s on the mantlepiece.

The chess set is back behind the settee.

Morse has acquired a multimedia cassette and record player combination. Also, the shelves now have cassettes.

We now have a new picture above the drinks cabinet (see pic below).

Also, the picture you can see in the pic above on Lewis’s right from the The Secret of bay 5B is different from this episode’s picture.

The screen is a different one from what we have seen before. Also look at the clock on the mantlepiece.

The mantlepiece clock has changed again for the third time. You can see the first version above. Below is the second version.

The print on the wall on the right has changed from what it was before (see pic below).

That little table to the left of the armchair is new.

Second Time Around.

So, what will be Morse’s new living room look like after the fire.

Morse has got himself a nice blue/grey armchair. The objects on the mantlepiece are all new as is the picture above the afore-mentioned mantlepiece. The wall paint is of a similar colour as to what it was before.

Where the drinks cabinet was is now a large, tall bookcase. A new, small picture is on the wall.

A brand new lamp and curtains. Morse has went for patterned curtain rather than a single coloured curtains he had before as can be seen in the pic below.

And a different painting above where the record player once was (and might still be as we don’t get a good view of that area).

But we can see that the new piece of furniture houses his LPs.

I hope you enjoyed this first part of a look into Morse’s flat/house. Part two coming soon.

10 thoughts

  1. The yellow “files/books” appear to me to be Wisden annual cricket books – which I always found troubling in Morse’s world as he was never a fan of the game. I was glad when they were no longer there.

  2. Thank you, Chris, these Morse living room changes were fun to see. I appreciate your attention to detail and all you do for us fans of the Morse Universe. Very well done.

  3. It’s fun to see the changes – and hard to see Morse shopping for furniture and curtains!

  4. Thank you very much, Chris.
The rooms and furnishings (furniture, pictures, lamps, etc.) reflect the taste of a gentleman. So pleasing to see.

  5. Chris,
Both clocks on the mantel are made from a wooden propellor (or inspired by) – one is a two-blade propellor, one appears to be from a four-blade wooden propellor.
Also is there a post on WHERE this was filmed? This was clearly a real room that was used for filming…

    1. Hi Matthew. I believe the famous location for Morse’s home, 28 Castlebar Park, was used externally and internally. Of course, for the fire scene in Masonic Mysteries a studio replica was built.

  6. I wonder if the props people made all these little changes deliberately to test whether people like you are looking out for them – or whether they were just sloppy in their continuity. It’s odd that a series of such high quality (in terms of the intricate references there often are in the scripts or cultural references or plot details) would be less precise in the details of furniture.
