Hello everyone and welcome to a new post. In the past I have created posts showing the missing scenes from series five and six of the Endeavour series. You can find these posts by clicking HERE and go to section 15 on the page.

I have now found out, thanks to Lewis fans on my live streams, that PBS also edited scenes from the Lewis series. A huge thank you to Nate who took the time to compare the PBS aired episode and the original UK broadcast. Unbelievably, there are some important scenes that have been excised by the editor for PBS who is akin to a heavy handed butcher.

Of course it is possible that not all regions had the following scenes deleted. To put the missing scenes into context I will include parts of the scenes that came before and after. Let me know thoughts on this post in the comments section. The running times I have mentioned below are those for the UK broadcast and DVD. So, for US viewers they will be AN approximate.

————————————————-

LET’S GET STARTED.

The first deletion is between nine minutes 55 seconds and ten minutes and five seconds. Lewis asks for Hobson to be all over this and Hathaway remarks that Hobson is on holiday.

Next deleted scene is at 11m and 23 seconds and ends at 11m and 29 seconds. No dialogue. Lewis watches Mallory pour some alcohol.

The third deleted scene is a longer scene. It starts at 13m and 42 seconds and ends at 14m and 44 seconds. The deleted involves Eleanor and David.

The fourth deleted scene starts at 16 minutes and ends at 16m and 23 seconds. The deleted scene starts when Lewis says @Professor’ and ends with Lewis saying ‘I might have to lie down.’

Fifth deleted scene is between 19m and 41 seconds and 19 and 49 seconds. It starts when Louise Hayward says ‘I was not going to cry.’ and ends when she says, ‘David’s got the bags.’

Sixth deleted scene starts at 20m and six seconds and ends at 20m and 20 seconds. Hugh says, ‘Anything you think you should have told me in Madagascar?’ and ends when David says, ‘It’ll be alright, Hugh.’

Next up is the seventh deleted scene which starts at 21m and 49 seconds and ends at 21m and 56 seconds. No dialogue. It involves Lewis and Hathaway walking away from the camera.

The eighth deleted scene starts at 24m and 7 seconds and ends at 24m and 20 seconds. No dialogue. It starts after Lewis says, ‘He’d speak up’ and ends when the scene returns to the police station.

The next scene includes two deleted parts between the times 31m and 34 seconds and 32m and 16 seconds. The first deletes Stoker saying ‘Tea breaks in 15 minutes’ and Hathaway saying ‘Thank you.’ and the second deleted part starts when Hathaway says, ‘Would you like him to be?’ and ends when Stoker says, ‘Well I never.’

Up next is a dialogue change (let’s call it scene 10). In the UK version, Lewis says, ‘They fall.’ but in the PBS version it has been changed to, ‘They walk to the edge of the cliff, They jump.’

The next deleted scene starts at 41m and 10 seconds and ends at 41m and 47 seconds. There is no dialogue. The deleted scene starts with Hathaway at the door and then stops when Lewis says, ‘he only gave you the name.’

Deleted scene 12 starts at 43m and 57 seconds and ends at 44m and 51 seconds. David says, ‘Can I say something?’ and ends when Hugh says, ‘I’ll bear it in mind.’

The next deleted scene, number 13 starts at 46m and 21 seconds and ends at 46m and 31 seconds. There is no dialogue. It is after the mortuary scene and when David says, ‘If you don’t mind me saying so.’

Deleted scene number 14 starts at 51m and 11 seconds and ends at 51m and 43 seconds. The deleted scene starts at Lewis saying, ‘Jane Templeton, discuss.’ and ends with Lewis saying, ‘But not till he talks to us.’

Deleted scene 15 starts at 55m and 25 seconds and ends at 55m and 25 seconds. Starts when Lewis asks, ‘Did Rachael talk about her work?’ and ends with Hugh saying, ‘Join things back together.’

Deleted scene number 16 is part of the above scene. It begins at 55m and 54 seconds and ends at 56m and 19 seconds. It starts with Hugh Mallory saying ‘I used to say to her.’ and ends with Hugh saying, ‘Who has the claim on one.’

Next up, the deleted scene starts a 1h 5m and 19 seconds and ends at 1h 8m and 18 seconds. It starts with Stephanie Fielding saying, ‘Don’t say anything.’ and ends with the deletion of the whole scene between Lewis and Louise Heyward.

Deleted scene number 18 begins at 1h 9m and 41 seconds and ends at 1h 9m and 59 seconds. The deleted scene starts at Innocent saying to Lewis, ‘The insolence I have endured.’ and ends when she says, ‘I will not permit it.’

The final deleted scene begins at 1h 29m and 45 seconds and ends at 1h 29m and 56 seconds. It starts with Innocent saying, ‘Because of you I have a migraine.’ and ends when Lewis says, Thank you ma’am. That’s a relief.’

There were a few other minor deletions but it was scenes that only lasted a few seconds. A big thank you to Nate for comparing the UK version with the PBS version.

Up until a few years ago I was my mum's full time carer. She died in, 2020, of Covid. At the moment I am attempting to write a novel.

  1. Shouldn’t there be some sort of consequence to PBS for distorting the original production? Wouldn’t the writers, directors, etc. of the original have some kind of recourse for this, in what basically is a change in the entire context/scenes of the show?

  2. Thank you for these scenes. I’ve watched Expiation several times recently, and it’s rapidly rising in my list of favorites. It’s great to see the relationship between Lewis and Hathaway firming up, and the scenes with Innocent are simply priceless. It’s also nice to see Lewis teetering on the edge of a relationship with an attractive woman. Altogether, a really satisfying episode, in my opinion.

    1. Hello Francis. You’re very welcome regarding the scenes. It is a great episodes with many great scenes.

  3. Hi Chris. Sorry to say, I won’t be participating in tonight’s discussion on Expiation. I have a headache at the moment, and I think it’s best I call it a miss this evening. My apologies. Anyway, I hope you are keeping well and take care.

    1. Oh James, I’m sorry to read your feeling under the weather. I hope we see you on Sunday.

  4. Hi Chris. Sorry to trouble you, but just thought I’d let you know, there still isn’t a catch-up stream to click on, for last Wednesday’s “Expiation” discussion, or yesterday’s “Moonbeams” episode on your Twitch page. The last available session to catch-up on, is the episode of “Expiation” from last Sunday week. I’m not sure why this has happened? I hope it can be rectified, please? Thanks Chris and take care.

    1. Hello James. Hopefully I have rectified the problem. For some reason the option was turned off in Twitch settings. Sorry, you were not able to watch the most recent streams.

  5. Thanks Chris for trying to resolve the issue. I clicked onto your Twitch page again just now, but unfortunately they’re still not available, that is the latest catch-up streams from last Wednesday or this Sunday. The “Expiation” episode from last Sunday week, remains the last session one can view, for some strange reason? Sorry to trouble you, Chris.
