Hello everyone and welcome to a new post. It will come as no surprise to anyone that series nine will be the last series of Endeavour. Below are some articles about the cancellation.

First up is from the Daily Express.

Endeavour cancelled: ITV bosses axe Inspector Morse prequel after 10 years
ENDEAVOUR has been cancelled by ITV bosses after 10 years, it has been confirmed.

Screenwriter Russell Lewis, Shaun Evans and Roger Allam have mutually decided to bring the Inspector Morse prequel, Endeavour to a close, and the ITV series currently filming in Oxford will be the last. Announcing the decision, executive producer Damien Timmer assured fans the final instalments would include “many surprises” and some returning favourites.

Speaking about the decision to end the ITV series, Executive producer Damien Timmer on behalf of producers, Mammoth Screen said: “Endeavour has been a real labour of love for all of us, and we salute Russell Lewis for his extraordinary achievement in chronicling Endeavour Morse’s coming of age across 72 hours of TV.

“Russell always knew where he wanted the series to end, and that Remorseful Day is nearly upon us!

“We’d like to thank Shaun and Roger and all the other members of the Endeavour family on and off-screen, and to the show’s fans both in the UK and abroad.

“Russell has many surprises up his sleeve for the final three films, with the return of some familiar faces and new challenges for Endeavour and Thursday to face before the final goodbye.”

ITV bosses also released a first-look trailer of series nine, which showed lead detective, Inspector Morse (played by Shaun Evans) giving an emotional speech.

“How clear, how lovely bright, how beautiful to sight those beams of mourning play?”

With tears in his eyes, he continued: “How heaven laughs out with glee like a bird set free up from the eastern sea, soars the delightful day.

“Today I shall be strong, no more shall yield to wrong shall squander life no more.”

“Days lost I know not how I shall retrieve them now, now I shall keep the vow I never kept before,” Endeavour Morse concluded.

“How hopeless underground fall the remorseful day.”

As the trailer came to a close, the caption, “The end of the beginning” appeared on the screen.

When series eight of Endeavour aired last year, Shaun Evans, who plays a younger version of Inspector Morse, discussed whether the series would come to an end.

Speaking directly to ITV, the actor admitted at the time the decision had yet to be made on whether to make Endeavour’s eighth series its last.

Author: Chris Sullivan

Up until a few years ago I was my mum's full time carer. She died in, 2020, of Covid. At the moment I am attempting to write a novel.

10 thoughts

  1. Hi there Chris – I posted on another thread (wasn’t sure if at the time you had seen the announcement) I am a bit puzzled – all indications were that S8 would be the last.

So why S9 ? I feel that they changed their minds half way through S8 (or just after). This series is not being telecast until 2023 – why would they not run it in the 10th year ?

Shaun is obviously directing the first episode again – i must admit I don’t have particularly high hopes. I just wondered what changed……why go to 36 when they had the opportunity to wrap up all in s8 and do 33 ?

I did laugh at some of the headlines here – ‘axed’ – not sure you can say that when the actors decided to pull the plug…..but something does not seem quite right – no announcements for so long…anyway maybe I am being over-suspicious.

    1. Yes, the show wasn’t axed, the actors and writer decided enough was enough. Why Russell decided to do more than 33 episodes can only be answered in one way; ego.

      1. Rather reluctantly I agree re: 36 – which is a shame.

some of the fans on other platforms will say it was always planned to go to S9, and part of Lewis ‘grand plan’ however, (no pun intended) the evidence suggests otherwise – many of those same fans posted while watching S8 filming were saying how the crew were telling them it was the last series – also Sara Vickers interview stated how they were told S8 was the last and were surprised when (at some point) they discovered they were coming back for another series.

Clearly as they are filming now and one would think will be done by July but the series is not to be broadcast until 2023 (another mystery – why would you miss the opportunity to wrap it up neatly – 1972/2022 – 2012/2022 (10 years after the first Endeavour) they are going big on the ‘sell’.

I am with you that Thursday dies (or my other theory is that Morse has to arrest him) although neither of those makes sense if Joan marries Strange and really fails to line up with the later series – but I think Lewis well and truly gave that away a number of series ago

  2. Oh that trailer seems to portend a not very happy ending for, and I’m only guessing, Thursday? I know Chris that you have discussed various reasons Thursday is not mentioned in the original Morse and one of those was the death of Thursday. And since that poem was recited by Endeavour to Thursday in one of the earlier episodes it would seem to fit that scenario. I will be in on pins and needles until I can get my hands on the DVD of series 9 when ITV releases it because that series would not be shown until very very late in the U.S. And another thought – it could be Joan’s demise since she is not mentioned in Morse either (and Thursday blames Endeavour-I would hate that twist.) The suspense!

    1. Hi Kathleen. I suppose it could be Joan but I will stick with my prediction that it’s Thursday who dies.

  3. It’s bound to be hard on all of you. Dear Endeavour cast and crew. My best for your future projects. A caring fan.

  4. tricky finding right page to post. disregard first attempt.

Sunday evenings June 19 & 26 PBS airs Endeavour #8 in the US. Source PBS 6/22 schedule. US appears to be a year behind UK programming.

    1. chris: page where #8 discussed on this site appears to reject recent comment.. helpful if you would leave information how to navigate here.

    2. hello Hespra, Wynn : I will tune into the Twitch stream shortly for Sunday night Morse.
