Hello everyone and welcome to a new post. This is part of an occasional series of posts on the scenes from the Lewis episodes that are either deleted or truncated when broadcast outside the UK.

A huge thanks to Nate, who resides in the USA, who has taken the time to collate all the information. Here is a note from Nate on Old School Ties.

This episode shares some oddities as “Expiation” with respect to the version lengths.

Library DVD – 1:25:38. ***I’ve assumed this is the version initially broadcast on PBS. I’ve used this to find the PBS deletions.***

Youtube version – 1:33:12 (I’ve assumed this is the same as your DVD, the full UK version.)

hoopladigital – 1:37:37 (but the length on the index page is given as 82 minutes, i.e., 1:22:00). Like “Expiation”, this is the same as the full UK version, but slowed down relative to it.

Conclusion: the current hoopladigital version is the same as the original UK version (but slowed down relative to it). The library DVD version is the PBS edited version.”

Of course it is possible that not all regions had the following scenes deleted. To put the missing scenes into context I will include parts of the scenes that came before and after. Let me know thoughts on this post in the comments section. The running times I have mentioned below are those for the UK broadcast and DVD. So, for US viewers they will be approximate.

Are you sitting comfortably because there are quite a lot of deleted scenes. Go and grab a coffee and a snack and I will start when you are ready………………………………………………………………….You’re back? Good. Here we go.

The first scene is a truncated rather than a deleted one. The excised part is when Innocent says, “He’s from your part of the world…” and ends when Lewis says, “But he’s retired now.”

The second scene is again more of a truncated scene. It starts at 7 minutes and six seconds and ends around ten seconds later. The excised part is the American, Mr Webster talking to the receptionist.

The third scene is again a truncation. The scene starts at 11 minutes and 16 seconds. The excised part is where there is no dialogue and Nicky sits waiting to be introduced.

The fourth scene starts at 15 minutes and 9 seconds. Like above the part that has been excised has no dialogue. It is where Nicky walks off with the two girls.

The fifth scene that has been edited starts around 16 minutes and 49 seconds and is where Lewis’s daughter phones him and he asks to call her back.

The sixth scene is a complete scene excised. The scene is when Hathaway talks to a hotel worker. It is around 21 minutes and 13 seconds.

The seventh scene is at 22 minutes and 59 seconds. Again a whole scene has been cut. The excised scene is with Innocent and Lewis.

The eighth scene cut out begins at 26 minutes and 15 seconds. It’s where Nicky talks to Lewis.

This ninth scene actually contains three cut parts each lasting only a few scenes. Part 9a is where when Nicky says, “Trouble is, Bullshit works.” Part 9b is where Nicky lies on the ground and says, “I’ll make the front pages tomorrow, bonny lad,” and 9c is where the police cars drive past.

The tenth scene is at 30 minutes and 14 seconds. Again another scene with Innocent and Lewis is cut out.

The eleventh scene starts at 43 minutes and 12 seconds. The excised scene is where Hathaway talks to the college porter.

The twelfth scene that has been cut starts at 45 minutes and 29 seconds. Part of the scene where Lewis is talking to Nicky’s wife in the restaurant has been cut. The cut part starts from when Lewis asks, “Where did marriage fit in all this?” and ends at the end of the scene.

The thirteenth scene is a small cut in the scene that follows the one above. It starts at 46 minutes and lasts only a few seconds. The part excised is where Caroline Morton says to Hathaway, “Scare him shitless and see what happens.”

The fourteenth scene is at 51 minutes and 44 seconds. The scene cut is where Lewis and Nicky’s wife get out of the car and talk.

The fifteenth scene lasts only a few seconds. It starts at 53 minutes and 53 seconds. The cat scene is where Lewis and Hathaway are walking through a college quad.

Sixteenth scene is again a small cut of 15 seconds. It starts at 57 minutes and 28 seconds. The cut scene is when Lewis meets the prison officer. Lewis asks, “You have locks in an open prison?” and ends when the prison officer jokes, “to stop the teachers from escaping.”

Seventeenth scene edited starts at 1 hour and 29 seconds. Lewis is talking to the prison psychologist. The cut scene starts when Lewis says, “There was a theory.” and ends when she says to Lewis, “Mind how you go.”

The eighteenth scene to be edited starts at one hour, four minutes and six seconds. The scene cut is the one with the American, Webster.

Nineteenth scene that is edited starts at one hour, 8 minutes and 20 seconds. The cut scene starts when Innocent asks, “What in God’s name…” and ends when Lewis says, “Charlie will be in his element.”

The twentieth scene is cut from one hour, 9 minutes and 29 seconds. Begins when Lewis says, “Besides I’m running late.” and ends when Lewis says, “And it isn’t over yet.”

21st scene that has been cut starts at one hour, 13 minutes and 34 seconds. The scene is where Lewis is talking to Norman the journalist on the phone.

The 22nd scene that is cut lasts only for the part in the scene where there is no dialogue and Hathaway and Diane tidy up. Starts at one hour and 14 minutes and 53 seconds.

The 23rd scene that is cut starts at one hour and 17 minutes and 17 seconds. It starts when Hathaway gets up from his chair and ends when the scene finishes.

The 24th and final deleted scene starts at one hour, 18 minutes and 33 seconds. The cut scene starts when Hathaway asks, “Did you get on with Nicky Turnbull?” and ends when Ray Hansen says, “Just asks the Inland Revenue.”

  1. Thank you this is lovely. To add to the confusion, on Masterpiece in Amazon Prime this episode is Season 1, Episode 2. (The Pilot is called Lewis Season 1 Episode 1 but labelled “Pilot” … on Britbox in Amazon Prime).
Thankfully the titles of the episodes have been retained. Or I would be completely confused.

  2. Thank you, Chris! This clips shed a lot of light and provide continuity. And besides, they are a lot of fun.

  3. What happens to Diane Turnbull in her last scene in “Old School Ties,” when Lewis hands her over to the constable who takes her downstairs? Is she charged or released?
