Another Star of the Morse Universe has Died: Ronald Pickup who appeared in both Morse and Lewis. Video Obituary.

Sadly, I have to report another death in the Morse Universe. Ronald Pickup (7 June 1940 – 24 February 2021) who starred in the Morse episode, Who Killed Harry Field

as Ian Matthews the Professor of Art whom Morse consults about Harry’s paintings.

Ronald also appeared in the Lewis episode, Wild Justice as Fr Moreno Mancini.

Ronald was a great British character actor and certainly a favourite in the Morse Universe. There were so many good performances from Ronald that it would take three posts to name them.

My favourite series or films that he appeared in, and made the series or film all the better for his appearance, (Morse and Lewis go without saying) are; Crystal Spirit: Orwell on Jura (1983) as George Orwell; Fortunes of War (TV Mini-Series) as Prince Yakimov; Parade’s End (TV Mini-Series) as General Haggard and The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel as Norman Cousins.

Below is a video of some of the scenes from the Lewis and Morse episodes.

Thank you Ronald for helping make the Morse Universe a better and happier place. All thoughts go out to his family.

Up until a few years ago I was my mum's full time carer. She died in, 2020, of Covid. At the moment I am attempting to write a novel.

  1. Thank you for this. I’m saddened to hear of the passing of this gifted actor. I’ve seen him in a variety of roles, and especially enjoyed his appearance in a episode of Midsomer Murders, along with his daughter Rachel. Condolences and best wishes to all his family.

  2. I first encountered Ronald Pickup in the 1974 series of “Father Brown” starring Kenneth More. The program was about a sun-worshiping con man. I have enjoyed many of his other performances over the years. Thanks for the videos of his Morse and Lewis appearances.
