You don’t have to join Twitch to watch but if you do join (it’s free) it has only the minimal amount of signing up protocol to go through and this will allow you to chat to me and everybody else.

For those not in the know in regard to Twitch, when I write ‘watch and chat’ the chat is via a text window so there is no actual talking over the episode.
To ‘chat’ (this means to type in the chat window that runs alongside the video) you need to register but that is all rather simple. It’s only a matter of choosing a screen name and entering your email address.
So, over the next weeks I am hoping to live stream all 33 of the Lewis episodes on Twitch. Twitch is one of the biggest social media sites in the world which allows people to live stream their various activities.

Hi Chris. I was sorry to see that Thursday evening’s “Inspecting Lewis” discussion, on “Old School Ties”, was cancelled due to illness, and I hope you are well. It is therefore good to observe that tomorrow’s “Sunday Night Lewis Club” is continuing as usual, although regrettably, I will not be able to join you all to watch, “Wild Justice”. Unfortunately, it is sometimes difficult for me to find the necessary time on a Sunday evening. Nevertheless, I aim to join you on Twitch for the live discussions on Tuesday and Thursday, if they are going ahead as normal.
Regarding last week’s Lewis episode “Old, Unhappy, Far Off Things”, I have noticed two possible Morse references. They are perhaps rather tenuous, but just outside the hospital at the 42 to 43 minute mark on my DVD, Ruth Brooks mentions to Lewis, that “Eddie had warned her not to date, or go out with Judd Havelock”. Lewis asks, “who is Eddie”, and Ruth says that “Edward Florey was Judd’s room-mate at Lonsdale”. This is a possible connection to Inspector Morse and Endeavour, as Morse’s alma mater was the fictional Lonsdale College of Oxford University.
My second Morse reference concerns the “cooking pot” phrase, said by Lewis in this episode, at about 19 minutes into my DVD, that you kindly explained the meaning of, to me Chris on Tuesday night. This is a bit of a long shot, or out of left field, I suppose you could say, but I wondered about this suggestion that I will detail. As you told me, missionaries on their travels to places such as Africa, were killed and possibly eaten out of the “cooking pot”, by cannibals. I believe there is also a theory that Captain Cook on his many adventures overseas, was killed by cannibals in the Pacific, perhaps on Hawaii. As we know, Captain Cook’s ship was called HMS Endeavour, and Morse memorably, finally told Lewis and Adele Cecil, his unknown Chrstian name, in the wonderful episode, “Death is Now My Neighbour”. He was named after Cook’s famous ship, because his father was a great fan of Britain’s great seafaring explorer and navigator of the eighteenth century. In addition Morse said, that his mother was a Quaker, and they are apparently known to sometimes give their chidren strange names, such as Hope or Patience.
In relation to the discussions on Tuesday and Thursday, that was certainly a good name that Midland thought of for them, “Inspecting Lewis”. I wondered if, when we possibly come to start discussing the Endeavour episodes in the future on Twitch, whether these could be called, “A Critical Endeavour”. Furthermore, if we hopefully at some point discuss the original Morse episodes, they could be called, “Decoding Morse”. They are only my tentative proposals, and I am sure there are many who have possibly better ideas. I said “critical” for Endeavour, because after all we would be “endeavoring” to critically analyse it, and for Inspector Morse, I thought “decoding”, as it fits in with the idea of the old communication system of Morse code. Moreover, a young Morse worked in the signal corps, as alluded to, in the Endeavour episode, “Girl”.
Finally, I agree with you Chris, in regards to the the lack of illustrious and highly esteemed, British charactor actors, throughout the Endeavour series. This did not happen in the Morse and Lewis series, most episodes had a number of these great thespians, and I believe this gave these two series, a certain gravitas, which is perhaps slightly missing in Endeavour without them. Does the high number of recurring main characters in Endeavour, there are many more of these, than in Morse or Lewis, mean, it is too expensive to hire some of the leading British character actors of the time?

Hi James. Thank you for your concern. Your second reference is rather tenuous James but your first regarding Lonsdale is a fair one. I will note that for the second edition of my book. It is possible that the wages that pay for the main actors in the Endeavour restrict any chance of attracting more illustrious British actors.

I also should have added in my comments above, that at the most basic level, the “cooking pot” phrase, made me think of the word “cook”, which led me to then, conjure up the name of Britain’s famous sailor, Captain James Cook. However, like you have said about yourself, I am perhaps guilty of conjuring up too many Morse references and connections. My poor excuse for this, would be the current heatwave that is hitting the south-east of England, so maybe I need a lie down in a cool place! I’m only joking, of course. Thanks Chris. I agree with you, “Morse Decoded”, is the best option to choose. It has a better sound or ring to it, and there is no need for the extra word, “Inspector”.

I have done some homework on this very good Lewis episode, and I have various questions and comments, I would have liked to have added to the debate, this evening.
