I know that many of you will not wish to watch The Remorseful Day episode and I am not expecting a large turnout when I stream the episode. I completely understand as I have only watched the episode twice in it’s entirety. But it needs to be streamed to complete the series.
What makes it doubly difficult to watch is not only do we see our beloved Morse die but John Thaw died sixteen months after the episode was broadcast in November 2000.
So, if you can bring yourself to watch this final episode of the Morse series join me and others to watch the live stream.
VERY IMPORTANT: For all those outside the UK you should be aware that the UK British Summer Time has ended and we are now on GMT. This means that the clocks went back one hour.
For the USA that means that
8pm in the UK is 3pm in New York.
8pm in the UK is 2pm in Chicago.
8pm in the UK is 1pm in Chicago.
8pm in the UK is midday in California.
8pm in the UK is 11am in Alaska and

You don’t have to join Twitch to watch but it if you do join (it’s free) it has only the minimal amount of signing up protocol to go through and this will allow you to chat to me and everybody else.

For those not in the know in regard to Twitch, when I write ‘watch and chat’ the chat is via a text window so there is no actual talking over the episode.
To ‘chat’ (this means to type in the chat window that runs alongside the video) you need to register but that is all rather simple. It’s only a matter of choosing a screen name and entering your email address.
So, over the next weeks I am hoping to live stream all 33 of the Morse episodes on Twitch. Twitch is one of the biggest social media sites in the world which allows people to live stream their various activities.

Chris…two questions.. in MORSE: Coda…Thursday is coughing horribly throughout the show. Towards the end as he is splitting up blood he coughs up a piece of something. I couldn’t tell what it was. Do you know? And also, when and where did Morse get that expensive car? I’ve always wondered.
Fred Thursday was shot by the corrupt ACC Deare, during the end of the explosive Series 2 finale, Neverland. I believe he was critically ill in the aftermath of this shooting, however he obviously recovered sufficiently enough to be back on duties by the start of Series 3. Nevertheless, clearly a bullet had not been properly dislodged from his system, and of course he finally coughs this up in the final episode of Series 3, Coda.

Hi Chris. It is difficult to believe isn’t it, that this final ever “Inspector Morse” episode was broadcast nearly twenty years ago. I remember all the anticipation during the build-up to this finale. Where has the time gone? I expect you are aware Chris, that “The Remorseful Day”, is being repeated on ITV, on Tuesday night this week. Clearly, it has been shown many times on ITV3 over the past decade or so, but this must be the first time in a good few year, that John Thaw’s Morse has been televised on the main ITV channel. Apparently, the powers that be at ITV, are repeating it this week, because there is a new programme next Sunday, called “Britian’s Favourite Detective”.
As you have said, Chris, in your article above, it is a very sad and mournful final episode, perhaps made all the more depressing, by the fact that regrettably, John Thaw himself, died about 16 months after this episode was broadcast. From a slightly different prespective, there is possibly a less morose way of viewing this finale. Imagine if John Thaw had already been ill, before the filming of this final episode, and thus wasn’t able to take his tremendous part in it. In that sense, Colin Dexter’s final Morse book may never have been adapted. What I am saying is, that at least John Thaw, before his own sad death, was able to complete and finalise his classic role as the eponymous, Inspector Morse. It would have been terrible, if the final book had been published, but in order for it to be televised another actor would have had to have played Morse. Thankfully that didn’t happen.
On another note Chris, frustratingly, I will not be able to join you tonight for the live stream on Twitch, of the Lewis episode, “The Gift of Promise”. As always, I will do my best to make it for Tuesday evening’s “Inspecting Lewis”, about the aforementioned episode. Hope you all enjoy the “Sunday Night Lewis Club”, and that is all from me for now. Hi Chris. Strangely enough, I have also only seen this episode twice. The first time, like yourself, was when it was originally broadcast, and the second time was about two or three years ago, once I had worked my way through to the final episode of the “Complete Inspector Morse”, I had bought on DVD. I have to admit it can be a difficult episode to watch, for obvious reasons, and I quite like your theory, that perhaps the series should have ended with Morse and Adele Cecil, walking off into the sunset together, and retiring to Australia.
However, from what I recall of “Promised Land”, when Morse and Lewis visited Australia to interview a “supergrass”, Morse was not particularly fond of Australia at all. The lack of real ale being one of his many bugbears, regarding the Australian way of life. Speaking of which, I know another person commented on this website the other day, in relation to Adele’s letter to Morse, briefly shown in “The Remorseful Day”, which perhaps detailed her reasons for leaving Morse, and emigrating to Australia. Personally, I couldn’t quite understand why she had chosen to end her relationship with Morse, and why she had moved to Australia?
Adele had seemed so caring and worried for Morse during his stay in hospital, during the previous episode “The Wench is Dead”. Clearly, they still parted on fairly good terms, as I believe Morse left something in his will for her. My only theory, as to why she chose this course of action, is possibly because Morse did not listen to his doctor’s advice, after his first bout of stomach ulcers, portrayed in the penultimate episode. He thus fell victim to another set of ulcers, referenced in “The Remorseful Day”, where he first met the nurse, who he had some “fun” with, before she became the first murder victim. Was this the reason Adele left Morse? Had she grown impatient, that he was not taking his health seriously, which of course led to his severe and painful decline, we witness in this final ever, Morse episode?
If I remember correctly, Adele went to Australia to start a new job. True, Morse didn’t like Australia but Adele was his last chance at happiness.
Hi Chris. Thanks for your kind reply. I didn’t realise Adele emigrated to Australia to start a new job, thanks for that information. As you say, even though Morse didn’t like Australia, if he really wanted to find love and happiness, and if he did not want to end his life single and perhaps lonely, he should possibly have travelled to, and settled down in Australia with Adele. Alas, this was not the way Dexter decided to conclude his Morse novels, but it is an interesting alternative ending, you have thought of Chris. That is all from me. Thank you, and goodbye for now.
Of all the times I watched the Morse episodes on DVD’s I just can’t bear to watch Remorseful Day again. I’m know we all would have wanted Morse and Adele to end up in happy retirement but I don’t think that would have worked for them. And perhaps better ending for Morse than retirement since work is all he ever really had as a purpose in life.
