Hello everyone and welcome to another another sad posting in regard to the death of another actor from the Morse Universe, Irene Sutcliffe.
Irene appeared very briefly in the Inspector Morse episode, The Dead of Jericho. It wasn’t a speaking part and it was a case of blink and you will miss her.
She appeared in the scene that involved Morse visiting the talk by Tony Richards. Irene is more famous for having appeared as a regular in the British soap Coronation Street from 1968 to 1974.
Though her appearance in the Morse episode was brief it still made her part of the Morse Universe and that is worthy of a mention in my book.
My thoughts and i’m sure yours are with her family at this time.
My late Mum always watched Corrie when I was growing up, so I more than likely watched Irene without being aware of who she was. Apropos of actors from the Morse Universe, there are a few (most notably Jessie Buckley and Donald Sumpter) appearing in the brilliant, and horrific, HBO series CHERNOBYL.
I’m confused as to why an accomplished and (I assume) at least reasonably well-known actress from her years on Coronation Street would have been cast in, essentially, the role of an extra. Would it have been like a celebrity cameo? Would viewers have seen her and said, “Oh look! It’s Irene Sutcliffe!”?
It’s possible Andrew, that she had a bigger part in the episode but ended up on the cutting room floor.
