Hello everybody and welcome to a ‘new’ post. Spookily over the last few weeks I have had quite a few people telling me that due to copyright infringements in their country they have been unable to watch some of my Youtube videos and in particular the ones regarding Colin’s appearances in all three series.
Thankfully due to my upgrading my blog to a website I am able to upload videos directly to the website bypassing the need to upload them to another platform such as Dailymotion or Youtube first.
For those who have not seen these videos enjoy and for those who have please enjoy again.
Colin did not appear in the episodes, ‘Ghosts in the Machine’, ‘Promised Land’, ‘The Secret of Bay 5B’ and ‘Sins of the Father’. I don’t believe he appeared in the episode, ‘Death of the Self’ either but other fans have said that he appears in the crowd scene near the end of the episode. I have included that clip in this video so you can make up your own mind.
Next up we have the Lewis video. Since I made this there have been a few other sightings noticed:
A double appearance of Colin Dexter in a Lewis episode. While watching the Lewis episode ‘Allegory of Love’ (Series 3, Episode 1) I was surprised by not only Mr Dexter appearing twice in the episode but that I hadn’t noticed this on a previous viewing.
Colin’s first appearance in the episode coming out of the Randolph at 6 minutes and 10 seconds.
Colin’s second appearance in the episode at 20 minutes and 24 seconds.
Thanks to Roland an eagle-eyed blog reader, we have another Lewis episode where he appears twice; ‘Life Born of Fire’ (Series 2, Episode 3). The first time he appears in the episode at 47 minutes and 35 seconds I had noticed.
The second sighting I never noticed and that is at the end of the episode at one hour, 31 minutes and 43 seconds.
There are two videos concerning Colin’s appearances in Lewis.
Next we have the appearances of Colin in the Endeavour series. My video only has appearance up to the episode ‘Coda’ (Series 3, Episode 4). For all other appearances see below video.
A follower of my blog, Fran, believes she may have found Colin in the final episode, ‘Coda’. I think she may be right. Colin’s appearance happens during the concert Endeavour attends at 14 minutes and 20 seconds. Fran believes Colin is one of the cello players; the one where we only see the back of his head. Why would the camera linger on the back of this person’s head unless they were leaving a clue to something important. What do you all think of this idea?
Endeavour S4E1 ‘Game’:
As most of you will know Colin Dexter did not be appear in the series four episodes due to ill health. However the producers have made sure that he appears in the episode in one way or another. In this episode Colin’s picture hangs in the office of Dorothea Frazil.
Endeavour: Series 4, Episode 2 ‘Canticle’:
In this episode Colin’s picture appears in the newspaper shown near the end of the episode.
Endeavour: Series 4, Episode 3, ‘Lazaretto’:
In this episode Colin’s picture appears as a caricature in a drawing on the hospital ward.
Endeavour: Series 4, Episode 4, ‘Harvest’:
It took two viewings to find Mr Dexter and it is a rather cunning way to have him in the show if not physically.
ENDEAVOUR: ‘Muse’ S5E1;
The newspaper is being read by George Fancy in Lewis Peek’s first scene in the police station.
ENDEAVOUR: ‘CARTOUCHE’ S5E2:
ENDEAVOUR: ‘Passenger’ S5E3:
A lovely tribute to Colin. Employee of the month? Perversely he was our employee. We handed him our hard earned cash and he wrote many excellent books for all of us. 🙂
ENDEAVOUR: ‘COLOURS’ S5E4;
ENDEAVOUR: ‘Quartet’ S5E5;
Difficult one this week. I could be wrong in this but the chap who was sitting at the back of the pub in the final scene did have a look of Colin Dexter.
Also, Endeavour looks at him as the scene fades to black.
ENDEAVOUR: ‘ICARUS’ S5E6;
I’m not 100% sure but… This is during the scene when Thursday and Strange are interviewing Blackwell.
I hope you all enjoyed the post. Remember to subscribe.
Thank you so much for the posting the appearances of C. Dexter. I forgot to even look for any in Series 5 and missed a few in other ones. Appreciate your doing this so much. You sound very busy with writing a book and caring for your mum. It is hard as I care for my sister but don’t want to put her in a home. Best to you.
You are very welcome Bobbie.
Is this a possible 3rd Colin Dexter sighting in Inspector Lewis “Life Born if Fire”? Man on bench when Lewis and Hathaway were speaking to Zoe about 1 hour in? Can’t figure out how to attach picture here
Thank You for the splendid eye for detail once again Christopher–it is such a pleasure to be involved with a talent such as yours that stays true to the page. Thank You again for keeping it real.
I just watched ‘Day of the Devil’ and I think Colin is shown in a portrait hanging inside the college when Morse and Lewis arrive to interview the Bursar?
Excellent! Thank you so much for all your efforts on these. I always look for Colin in the scenes. So nice of all to honor him for his excellent novels.
Very interesting, thank you! Came here after seeing C. Dexter on the post it board in the police station in the Pylon episode.
This has been great fun to tour your video blog! Well done. I would only add that he is seen talking to Julian Mitchell in “The Silent World of Nicholas Quinn,” which leads me to wonder what other cameos Julian gets?
We’ve been re-watching all of these shows during our COVid isolation, but now with your delightful guide I think we’re gong to have to settle in for a third go-round. Thank for this.
You’re very welcome Linda.
This is excellent! Thank yt
Colin Dexter appears in Endeavour, Series 1 Episode 4 HOME.
He appears as a college professor at beginning of episode
Thank you Liz but I mentioned that appearance in the video within the post and in my review of the episode.
Oops.
Watching Morse Series4 Ep4 Masonic Mysteries. And there CD is in the chorus with Morse. This too may have been noted previously. This is great fun and has added so much to my enjoyment of these excellent series.
Thanks for these posts! See Lewis, The Great and the Good, about 10:44 into the episode, standing next to Tim Dutton after the classroom scene. To me, this episode had a very strong Colin Dexter “feel” about the plot, though I’m not aware of a similar plot in the Morse books. All the best to you.
Colin chatting on a bench, Endeavour Season 2 Episode 4, Neverland, 35 seconds in.
Hi Christine. I mentioned that in my review of the episode.
I am reading the Inspector Morse novel, “The Dead of Jericho”. Colin Dexter wrote so beautifully. I’ve loved watching Morse, Lewis, Endeavour…To learn that this man was profoundly deaf stunned me. And now, to know that he was actually IN several of the episodes is very exciting. Thank you for this research and for letting us enjoy the revelation.
I was always watching out for his fleeting appearances in these episodes. Often missed them.

Is that Colin Dexter
Just watching Episode 1 Prelude of the the final series 9 and saw a poster on the wall for Dexter Satchels and looked like a photo of Colin. cannot look at it again as me and the wife are watching it live and it would annoy here if i rewound it HAHA.
Is colin in ghost in the machine, opening scene, top right of the table leaning forward making notes? Think it is!
Yes, i mention that in my review of the episode.
