Music in Marmalade Cat Shop Scene From Passenger Episode. Is It Midnight Addiction?

Hello fellow Endeavourists. I hope this post finds you all well and happy.

So, I have been getting a lot of comments and emails about a particular piece of music used in the Endeavour episode Passenger. In the UK DVD it plays around the 56 minute mark while in the USA TV version I believe it plays around the 51 minute mark.

The scene is when both Endeavour and Thursday visit Alice’s Marmalade Cat shop. I can’t identify it but I think it is Janis Joplin but I am unsure of the song title. (Janis Joplin’s A Piece of Mt Heart does play earlier in the episode). However many people believe it is the song Hard Times sung by the fictional group Midnight Addiction from the Lewis episode Counter Culture Blues. I personally don’t believe it is but hey i’m not infallible.

So, I have recorded the scene from Endeavour and a scene from where the Midnight Addiction song is played in the Lewis episode. Listen to both and let me know your thoughts. Of course i’m assuming that the US have used the same piece of music as in the UK but this is not always the case due to copyright infringements in the US.

  1. MMM turned it right up, Passenger ep clip…could be…yep, really Could be……did you know that its Maggie Bells voice we hear in the CCB ep.?!

  2. Chris – this is hilarious – the great debate of the background sound. I definitely hear Maggie Bell singing “Hard Times” from the Counter Culture Blues episode, which is a favorite of mine. It’s definitely not Joplin.

  3. To me it definitely sounds like the music from Lewis (“Hard Times” from “Counter Culture Blues”). And, though they took out all the expensive music from the PBS showing of the episode in the US (Cream, Joplin, Rolling Stones), this piece was the same.

  4. I’ve just watched a 2019 ITV re-run of the Endeavour episode & run the clip through ‘Shazam’. It comes back as ‘Piece of my Heart’ by ‘Big Brother & the Holding Company with Janis Joplin’ from 1968. From the loudest bit at the end of the clip, it is most definitely Janis singing the track. I can only assume that if both are correct, they have changed the music backing in later re-runs?

      1. Yet in the first clip above, the music sounds different. I’m not hearing Janis Joplin there at all?
