Max DeBryn (Inspector Morse and Endeavour): A Life on Screen, Part One.

SPOILERS! SPOILERS! Hello everyone and welcome to my new post. This is part one of what will probably be a five part series of posts on the character of Max DeBryn, played by James Bradshaw in the Endeavour series and Peter Woodthorpe in the Inspector Morse series.

Part one covers the pilot episode of the Endeavour series and scenes from the first series. The scenes do include spoilers. So, if you haven’t watched the pilot episode and the first series then be warned.

I hope you enjoy. Take care.

Up until a few years ago I was my mum's full time carer. She died last year, 2020, of Covid. I am now about to start my third year year at Edinburgh University studying for a second degree this one being English Literature. My other degree is in Ecological Science. At the moment I am attempting to write a novel.

  1. What surprises me is that Endeavour and Max DeBryn never developed any closer friendship. Two young and single men, educated and intellectual with a deep interest for their line of work and somewhere over the years they both lost the girls they loved. Or as Max poetically puts it: Love and fishing, it all comes down to the same thing; the one that got away. Presumably he talks about a woman.
Max is a keen angler and likes to work in his garden, two outdoor activities while Endeavour likes to read, solve crossword puzzle and listen to music. Usually something you do indoors. Despite that I can see more in common between Max and Endeavour than with Endeavour and Strange sharing a flat. If proposed at the time, would Endeavour have accepted the idea to rent a room in Max’s house? Well, that is all hypothetical now.

  2. Very interesting….I too have wished DeBryn and Morse would have become close they definitely had mutual respect. Dr Debryn of Endeavor is one of my favorite characters its hard to reconcile him with the DeBryn of Morse
