Hello everyone and welcome to a new post. During one of my recent Morse streams on Twitch, (see above for a link to my Twitch page), the Usual Suspects (my name for those in chat), were discussing the plot device of husbands who are cuckolds in the Morse Universe. The Oxford English Dictionary definition of ‘cuckold’ is; ‘The husband of an adulteress, often regarded as an object of derision, ultimately derived from Old French cucu ‘cuckoo’, from the cuckoo’s habit of laying its egg in another bird’s nest.’ According to the New York Times, “Although a female version of the word cuckold exists (it’s cuckquean), it’s little used, probably because, as far as the larger sense of the word’s meaning is concerned, there has been no female equivalent of the cuckold. Wronged wives typically have been figures of sympathy, not jest.” So, on that theme here are all the episodes that feature a cuckold husband in the Morse, Lewis and Endeavour series. Enjoy.
SPOILERS ALERT.
Let’s take a look at the Morse series first:

The Last Enemy (Series 3, Episode 2).
There is a cuckold husband in this episode, Arthur Drysdale, whose wife was having an affair with Nicholas Balarat. However, this event happened many years before the setting of the episode. We never see Drysdale’s wife or Nicholas Balarat in the episode apart from his dead body in the canal.
Arthur Drysdale.
Drysdale kills Nicholas Balarat and his body is found in the canal in the clothes of Kerridge.
Deceived by Flight (Series 3, Episode 3)

Yvonne Harrison John Barron
Yvonne is killed by her daughter, Sandra. John Barron is killed by Roy, Frank Harrison’s, (Yvonne’s husband) illegitimate son.
So, that is 17 episodes out of 33 have a cuckold husband. Let’s move to the Lewis series.
———————————————————
Time to look at the Lewis series. The pilot episode, Reputation, I don’t count as episode one of series one.
Expiation (Series 1, Episode 3)
There isn’t really any cuckolding in this but the wives did swap husbands or vice versa but with each other’s permission.
The Great and the Good (Series 2, Episode 4)

That’s it for the Lewis series. So seven out of 33 episodes have a cuckold husband. Eight if you count Expiation.
——————————————-
Let’s move onto the Endeavour series.
Pilot Episode (First Bus to Woodstock)
Rosalind Stromming has an affair with Miles Percival.

Kay Belborough has/had an affair with Joss Bixby. She was also flirting with Endeavour.
Kay Belborough Joss Bixby
Arcadia (Series 3, Episode2).
Annette Richardson flirts with Endeavour.
Annette Richardson.
Oracle (Series 7, Episode 1)
Violetta Talenti is having an affair with Endeavour. However, we find out Ludo knew about the affair so he is not an actual cuckold but I thought I would mention the episode.
Violetta Talenti
Raga (Series 7, Episode 2).
As above in regard to Endeavour and Violetta.

As above in regard to Endeavour and Violetta.
Striker (Series 8, Episode 1).
Sarah Sellars has an affair with John Paul.
Sarah Sellars John Paul
Sarah’s husband, George kills John Paul.
So, the Endeavour series had only five episode out of 33 involving a cuckold husband. That is if you discount all of series seven and Arcadia where Annette only flirts with Endeavour.
I hope you all enjoyed this delve into the murky waters of sexual affairs and the cuckold husbands. If I have missed anything out let me know in the comments section. Take care.

Thank you Chris – great info and work ! And a what a fun listing…… However, isn’t Pamela Walters affair in the episode ‘Girl’ not the pilot ? I think if you count ‘flirtations’ you might have to include Sway and Fred and Luisa……..???
That’s interesting I never would have counted Susan Fallon – I never got the impression that she was having an affair with Henry while she was engaged to Morse – rather she was dating Fallon before Morse and he (Fallon) won her back and that is why she broke off the engagement.
Hi Maria. You’re right about Palmer. I forgot to add the heading. Regarding Luisa she isn’t married so there is no cuckold husband.
Re: Luisa – of course….I forgot her husband was dead wasn’t he ? Hence her English surname…
