Hi Chris. I hope you had a wonderful Christmas Day. I would also like to wish everyone, who reads and contributes, to this great website, a Merry Christmas!! Here is a question, I hope you all find interesting. Imagine it is a normal Christmas, without the current restrictions and limitations. How do you think our fictional hero, Morse, would celebrate Christmas? This can be for the younger or older Morse, and I just hope he isn’t too lonely. Would the Thursday family invite the younger Morse over to their house? Would Lewis and his family, invite the older Morse around, at some point during the festive season? Finally, would Morse’s half-sister, and her family, celebrate Christmas with Morse. The only trouble with that last hypothesis, would be Morse’s wicked step-mother. She appeared to partcularly dislike Morse, so spending Christmas with his half-sister, was possibly, a difficult conundrum for Morse.
I had a lovely Christmas thank you James. I hope you also had a lovely time. I think the younger Morse would celebrate Christmas but in a small way. I believe the older Morse would not celebrate it. The Thursday family would I believe invite the young Morse but I think he would decline. The same for the older Morse. I believe Lewis would invite him over but he would decline. With Morse’s family being Quakers, one has to assume that when Morse was growing up he and his family never celebrated the Christian festival. This act of not celebrating Christmas may have stayed with Morse through his life. I think Lewis and Hobson would invite Hathaway over to their house for christmas.
Thank you Chris, for taking the time during the festive season, to reply to my “Christmas” based question. Thanks also to Kathleen and Bo, for joining in the discussion. You make some very interesting points, Chris, as do, Kathleen and Bo. I thought about Morse as an atheist, but I forgot to consider the fact Morse’s mother, who died young, was a Quaker, and that must have had an impact on Morse. It is a shame to think during his life, Morse perhaps, rarely celebrated Christmas. Having said that, Christmas is a time for giving, and not wishing to be cruel, Morse wasn’t known for putting his hand in his pocket!!! Furthermore, I could see Morse beavering away trying to solve a murder case, while everyone else would be enjoying the festivities. For the older Morse, this could possibly have led him to ringing up Lewis, during the holidays, at an awkward time, to ask him his thoughts, and perhaps he would ask Lewis, to accompany him to the police station, or to arrest a suspect. Lewis would say, “surely not at this time, sir?” While Morse would reply, “just because it is Christmas, Lewis, it doesn’t mean the criminals go on holiday!!!”
I agree with you Chris, about Lewis and Hobson, I could see them inviting Hathaway over for Christmas. Anyway, I also had a lovely time on Christmas Day, and I hope to join you all tonight, for “The John Thaw Story” on Twitch. Thank you Chris, and Merry Christmas everyone.
For anyone not that familiar with Quakerism, and in all honesty, I’m certainly not an expert, Quakers do not celebrate Christian festivals, such as Easter and Christmas (although Quaker families may mark Christmas, as the secular festival it has largely become).
They believe the events celebrated at such festivals, (e.g. the resurrection and the incarnation) should be kept in mind throughout the year. Finally, the formal title of the Quaker movement is the Society of Friends or the Religious Society of Friends.
Hi James, An interesting question. I believe it was in Zenana (I’m not exactly certain because my DVD player is not hooked up yet to refresh my memory) but I think this is when, at Win’s suggestion, Thursday attempts to invite Endeavour over for Christmas lunch (even though they were at odds). He knocks on his door but he has already gone to Venice. I think Endeavour might have gone to Thursday’s at that time but I don’t think the older Morse would accept a social invitation. I have wondered why after all the years together Lewis and Morse never got together socially but then I always think of Morse as a loner and not one to take part in any festivities (except an opera gala!). In another episode Endeavour was noticeably uneasy at Joan’s flat warming party and left right away. So I think for the most part both the young and older Morse would not be inclined to join/accept any social invitations.
I read in a novel, I’m afraid I no longer remember which one, that Morse went to Lewis’s place for lunch or dinner. They sat at the kitchen table eating and talking and Morse also spoke to Mrs Lewis. If that was a one-time occurrence I don’t know.
I think also another reason why Endeavour left Joan’s flat warming party was because his meeting with Joan didn’t turn out to be what he expected. He had hoped for so much more, instead she suggests he should meet this other girl she knows of and you can see how disappointed he gets.
But Endeavour/Morse was never much for social gatherings, we know that. For instance he didn’t attend the farewell party for Jakes at the pub, claiming he had work waiting to be done.
If Thursday invited him for Christmas, I wish for his own sake Endeavour would accept, at least to go there for a few hours if not the whole evening. For a young man he spends too much time on his own.
For Christmas I think older Morse would have enjoyed his Glenfiddich and he might have travelled somewhere, why not to Italy.
In my former comment I should’ve clicked the Reply button to Kathleen’s comments, but realised my mistake too late. Anyway, in your comment James, I could detect a hidden intrigue. And, if I may say so, change Lewis for Thursday and you’re halfway through writing and concoct a new episode in our Endeavour drama. Maybe that’s what we should be doing next year, put all our brains together and write an episode. 🙂
Endeavour has suffered so many traumatic experiences and yet these after effects are never reflected in the elder Morse series. Of course I know that it is all after the fact, but it just makes me think that, as much as I love the references to the elder Morse in the Endeavour series, the two don’t really have that much in common. It seems as if Russell Lewis is just writing a stand alone series with some familiar names thrown in. Not that I don’t like it because I LOVE the original Morse and the Endeavour series. Just sometimes wish they correlated to each other more.
Hi Bo. By all means, if you wish, substitute my little imagined scene between Morse and Lewis on the phone, for Morse and Thursday. I chose Lewis, because of the silly business in the most recent Endeavour series, where Morse and Thursday fell out with each other. However, we can forget about that, can’t we, and write our own script!!!
I also chose Lewis, because I was thinking, as they discussed the case over the phone, Lewis would say something, apparently innocuous, and Morse would suddenly say, you’ve cracked it. He would then say, he didn’t need Lewis, stay at home and celebrate Christmas with your wife and kids. It would thus be the old formula of Lewis accidentally solving the crime!!!
