I know there are software that can readily identify music pretty handily but a compilation with such detailed notations is quite priceless! I’m always on the lookout, especially for the classical music, to identify the actual piece from the show, especially the operas as it makes a huge difference who the soprano is (for example). I’ve managed to expand my own library to include other work from Elgar, who I wasn’t so familiar with before. Again, thank you and hope you are doing well yourself. Just received series 1 thru 5 of Endeavour, enjoying binge watching. Series 1 Joan quite a flirt! Also enjoyed your tour of the Randolph, Chris.
I had no idea the pilot had a title. I know it refers to Dexter’s first book in the series. But I have the DVD, and it only says “Pilot.” Nothing else.
The In Dreams song is in my opinion not the voice of Roy O.
Even the text is not (overall) exactly the same, and the melody is different
I’m trying to get a finger on it but so far no luck.
A few people have remarked on that but a Roy Orbison fan said it was definitely him. He said something about Roy having recorded various versions of the song and changing the way he sang it.
On the original broadcast, it was definitely Orbison and “In Dreams”, the original recording. On international broadcasts, *definitely* neither Orbison nor “In Dreams” but a transparent imitation of both.
Just watching it now and it is the original by Roy Orbison. For the show, they edited it and went right from the start of the song to the end. 100% guaranteed.
Love your work Chris. It was such a delight to find your list with the Roy Orbison song on Endeavour this evening. And of course Shazzam couldn’t get it.

I apologize for my previous post. I have now seen both the original Confection as shown on BBC and the PBS version on Masterpiece Mystery which substituted another song for In Dreams. As was pointed out, it’s not even a real song but probably written to sound vaguely similar, which it does not. Substituting songs on tv show repeats or dvd releases is commonly done because they can’t get the rights to use the song again in reruns or in another country. I don’t like this because it ruins the series creator’s intent in choosing the songs. It ruins the artistic integrity. Also there is the issue of whole scenes being cut by PBS. I appreciate your listing the scenes that are missing from the PBS versions. The existing British tapes and DVDS for sale are only in PAL format which plays in Europe. The PBS dvds which they sell would surely have their edited versions. The only pure way to see the originals would be to tape it off British TV if it was rerun intact, obtain tapes from a British person who taped it when it was first run, or buy the British DVDS if guaranteed that they are uncut and find a dvd player that plays all regions. Right now I am watching tapes made by a British person and yet I like to watch it on PBS – until I am stopped in my tracks by some change PBS made! Still, nothing can ruin the magnificence of this series.
Yes. All the more so in this case because (a) trying to copy “In Dreams” is like trying to copy “God Only Knows” – there aren’t many songs that resemble it, it’s not like you can cover your tracks – and (b) the whole POINT of the picket fences, rotten apple etc was to pay homage to David Lynch’s “Blue Velvet” and evoke the same sense of malevolence beneath the surface of suburbia.
Season 6 Episode 3 Confection, the opening song is “In My Dreams”. Who is singing that song. It is not Roy Orbison who never sounded as good as the guy singing it in the opening of episode 3.
Strong disagree from me about the quality, but yes, Orbison has been replaced by a soundalike – and an imitation song – for international versions. Clearance problems? It does kinda wreck the Blue Velvet homage clearly intended in the opening sequence – and “In Dreams” is *such* a distinctive and idiosyncratic song (no chorus, evolving structure, only tiny repeats in it) that copying it seems a futile… endeavour.

Some observations:
if you listen to the speaking voice of Shaun Evans and the singing voice in this song, they both share the same nasal quality. The song was obviously written for this episode. If it were a name singer, it would not go unattributed. It does not appear to my ears to be a professional singer but the transition into the falsetto is incredible. Not many can do it as well as this singer which is why I want to know who it is!
Just saw that the PBS version of Sway has removed the Dean Martin song “Sway” and replaced it throughout with an unknown instrumental tune. In the opening scene of original broadcast, the record label with the word “Sway” is clearly shown as the needle is placed on the record. In the PBS version this is cut out.
Regarding the opening song of Confection, it is puzzling to me that no-one from PBS or any other organization etc., has replied to the question. A few of you who have posted explain that it is not unusual for substitutions to be made which I can understand due to copyrights etc., but I would like to have heard it ‘straight from the horses mouth’ so to speak.
Just saw both versions of Ride again. The original, and the edited one on PBS. It’s so annoying that they cut out all the real songs – The End of the World, Concrete and Clay, You’re Gonna Miss Me, etc. and replaced them with generic intrumentals. I was just watching it because it was rerun on PBS, and realized something was off. So I went back and forth between them and saw not just the different music, but several scenes were cut. For example, Thursday goes to Morse’s cabin and waits for him, and comments that “he could have told her” where he was because “she was worried.” I thought, who? His daughter Joan? But no – on PBS they cut out the scene where Thursday talks to Monica, Morse’s ex girlfriend. Several other scenes, however short, make viewing the PBS version puzzling. Ride is already so complicated that cutting scenes really did harm it.
S6 E4 “Deguello” — It is NOT “Mexicali Rose”, NOR is it “Vaya Con Dios”. I’ve listened to both, and it is neither.
It’s an original song, composed by Matthew Slater for the episode, called (appropriately) “Deguello”. Slater is a principal composer for the Endeavor series, and he is listed as the “Deguello” song’s Composer. Here is a link to Slater’s website, where you can find the song in its entirety if you scroll down to the episode. There is no vocalist credit, which I find odd. I haven’t been able to find this song on any other platform, which is also odd.

The modern music for Series 3, Ride, includes “Sunday Morning by THE VELVET UNDERGROUND & NICO” for the scene in which Morse encounters the 2 women dancing. In the version aired in the USA, this music was replaced by an instrumental, presumably for copyright reasons. Does anyone know if the replacement music is a known composition, or composed specifically for the episode? It has a lovely dreamlike quality. I found part of it on a video entitled “The Sixties-The cast and creators explore the influential era of Endeavour Morse.”

I think that last piece of season 2 episode 3 (“Sway”) is Elgar Sospiri, and not Albinoni’s Adagio.

Thank you Per. I will have another listen to the piece. But I will add that my list is based on the UK version and very often the music that is played in other countries is different due to copyright issues.
Have just watched the seventh series on Daily Motion, because it won’t be on PBS here in the States until August. I love Endeavor BUT as a classical composer (and Prof. of Music) In was sorely disappointed at the quality and lack of classical music used in this series. What makes Endeavor so amazing is the use of classical music, it is who Morse is after all. In the final episode, there was even a horrible “contrived” steal from Moonlight Sonata-and used twice in the same episode. What has happened to the music department for this production? It’s sad because without that element, it is just another mystery…come to think of it, why wasn’t Morse doing any cross word puzzles. What happened to Morse?
Laura – S7 in my opinion – was like watching other characters in a different series. It was not just the music, crosswords (although I think there was a scene with Morse doing one while renovating) but Morse seemed to have a character transplant – coupled with the Talenti’s (almost cartoon characters) it was overwhelming disappointing. S6 had its moments but I enjoyed it and could re-watch – haven’t bothered with S7 re-watch (and I even bought the DVD) – I have everything crossed for S8.
I couldn’t agree more Laura. In my reviews of the last few series of Endeavour I have complained about the lack of classical music, the poor incidental music and how Endeavour’s character is not someone I recognise as the quintessential Morse we know and love.
what about serie seven? I would very much like to know de name of the opera of Episode “ORACLE”
The opera piece was written specifically for the episode by Matthew Sweet the series composer.

Hi Salvatore. In the original UK broadcast it was Jim Reeves. Outside the UK because of copyright and financial issues they normally use a session singer to sing a song that sounds familiar to the one used in the UK broadcast. I hope this helps.
Thank you for compiling this list. There are several pieces of music that were familiar to me, but I couldn’t put a name to them, which then drove me nuts. Now I just have to check here. That’s so great.
As for the unidentified piece of music in Sway, I believe that’s the intro or “first verse” of O Sole Mio, but the chorus is muddled about a bit which makes the song harder to recognize.

Re Endeavor Season 6 Episode 3 beginning song I think Findlay Brown is the one.

In the PBS version I think it is Findlay Brown. I just love his voice.
Hello, thanks for the work that you’ve put in to this site. I have a question regarding a snippet of a song played during the red carpet scene at the Roxy theatre in Cartouche (S05E02) It sounds like a late 60s UK jazz rock band called Colosseum with Jon Hiseman and Dave Greenslade, but I cannot find it in my collection. It also may be from another similar band ‘IF’ with Dick Morrisey. It’s only a 20 second long instrumental snippet and may not be identified anywhere. Thanks. GM
Series 8 Episode 2 in the dance scene at the Freemasons Ball a dance band is singing “Starlight Wonder”. I can’t find it anywhere.
Hello! Thanks for your site. Jumping the gun here, perhaps, but I just spent the the whole morning figuring out what the first classical piece in Series 8 Episode 2 (“Scherzo”) was – fortunately I found it. It’s Wagner, but not “Tristan und Isolde” – it’s one of the Wesendonck Lieder, “Im Treibhaus.” It’s considered a study for Tristan, but it’s a brilliant choice for Endeavour at that point on all sorts of levels. Find the text & translation – it’s all about not belonging, and with the tie to Tristan, weaves in the idea of tragic and consuming love.
