New College Oxford Choir – ‘Inspector Morse’ Theme With Lyrics.

Hello everyone and welcome to a new post.

My son recently bought a new computer, well he actually built his new computer. Anyway he gave me his old one which is much more powerful than the one I had. While moving everything over from the old to the new computer I came across some things that I forgot I had.

This video is the first of a few that I will be uploading over the next few weeks.

This is a recording session for an album from the New College Choir.
This vocal arrangement was prepared specially for the choir, and features lyrics set to the popular theme from the television programme Inspector Morse.

The album is called ‘Illumina: Music of Light.

Her are the album details:

Release Date: 2 April 2012
Label: Decca (UMO)
Copyright: ℗© 2012 Decca, a division of Universal Music Operations Limited
Total Length: 1:16:07
Recorded in St Michael’s Church, Summertown, Oxford, July 2010 and March 2011

Inspector Morse, Oxford’s cult television character, is celebrated with Barrington Pheloung’s theme song, for the first time in vocal arrangement by director Edward Higginbottom. The album celebrates choral excellence and follows the fascination of vocal music through the centuries to the present day.

In ‘Illumina’ you will find some of our best loved choral classics: gems such Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater and Mozart’s Laudate Dominum are presented alongside contemporary works in the great Anglo-American choral tradition with composers such as John Rutter, Morten Lauridsen and Eric Whitacre. You will also discover brand new arrangements of Franck’s famous Panis Angelicus and Mahler’s Adagietto from his Fifth Symphony.

The tracks on the album are as follows:

1 Mahler: Ave Maria (Adagietto from Symphony No. 5) 8:09
2 Benedictus (Morse Theme) 4:05
3 Lauridsen: Ave Dulcissima Maria 8:01
4 Rachmaninov: Lord Now Lettest Thou Thy Servant Depart 3:13
5 Mozart: Laudate Dominum 4:20
6 Bruckner: Locus Iste 2:39
7 Franck: Panis Angelicus 3:23
8 MacMillan: Christus Vincit 6:42
9 Whitacre: Lux Aurumque 4:00
10 Rutter: The Lord Bless You And Keep You – The Lord Bless You And Keep You 2:48
11 Agnus Dei 3:35
12 Traditional: Rorate Caeli 6:17
13 Pergolesi: Stabat Mater 4:16
14 Rheinberger: Abendlied 2:38
15 Lauridsen: O Magnum Mysterium 6:24
16 J.S. Bach: Ave Maria 2:51
17 Duruflé: Quatre Motets, Op.10 – Ubi caritas et amor 2:46

The album can be bought on Itunes, Amazon etc.

Lyrics to New College Oxford Version of Inspector Morse.

Benedictus, benedicatur,
Benedicatur.
Viasurgat obire tibi
Usque a tergo ventus sit
Temidam sol
Faxit faciem
In agros pluvial cadat
Dum rursus coimus
Deus te sua manu teneat.

Blessed is he, and may ne be blessed
And may he bless us.
May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine
Warm upon your face.
The rain fall soft upon your fields,
May God hold you in the palm of your hand,
Until we meet again.

Up until a few years ago I was my mum's full time carer. She died in, 2020, of Covid. At the moment I am attempting to write a novel.

  1. Thank you for posting this video; beautifully done. Good luck on your new endeavour; no pun intended. Returning to university as an adult will be a joy. I did it and became a psychologist. A lot of work, but amply satisfying.

  2. The video was lovely/brilliant ! I envy you returning to school, and wish you all good wishes, Chris.

  3. Thank you for sharing this, Chris. I wish you every success with your new “career” as a student ! Having retired from dentistry 7 years ago, I, too, am seriously considering returning to uni to study for a degree in English Language & Linguistics. I’m sure we’ll both enjoy it better the second time around!

  4. I would love to make a donation, but when I logged onto PayPal, there was no link to your site – if you can leave further information on donating, I’d appreciate it – thank you for all you do!

    1. Hi Vanessa. Thank you for considering making a donation. I have checked the link and it appears fine. I also received a donation this morning so it appears to be working fine. It may have something to do with your security settings on whatever device you are using.

  5. This is beautiful Chris, thank you so very much, I shall order a copy now. Thank you for sharing. Teresa

  6. Thank you for the PDF of music. And thank you for this blog.
I have been looking through your material and do not see a listing to identify the choral music in Lewis season 06 ep 03 ‘Fearful Symmetry’. Am I missing it somewhere?

    1. Hi Lynn. Thank you for your kind comment. I’m in the process of writing a book on the Lewis series so all the music info will be in that.

      1. Years later, I’m also looking to identify the music in this episode. Any updates? I wouldn’t be buying a book just for this snippet, sorry! Hello, I just came across this website from a google search for this music.

  7. I would love to have the sheet music to the Morse theme with words. I’ve looked for it and can’t find it. Do you know how I could buy or obtain a copy? I’ve always been obsessed with that theme, and the way Mr. (Dr.?) Higginbottom has arranged it and the choir sings it is luminous.
