New BBC Radio Drama. Morse: In the Shallows. Saturday 14th July 2018 at 2:30pm

Great news. As the title states the BBC have produced a new Morse drama to be shown this Saturday 14th July 2018 at 3pm.

Terrible things happen even in beautiful places and among highly educated people. Morse, Lewis and Strange are back on their criminally fertile Oxford patch – dealing with a mysterious pair of Oxford students who appear to be fish out of water, a Don found dead in the river, and an attractive philosopher who pleads with Morse to drop his investigation to save her career.

It’s still the early 1990s when computers, mobiles, digital media and sophisticated forensic techniques are not yet in use. Morse’s detection methods rely on instinct, acutely honed observational skills and dogged gumshoe perseverance. Colin Dexter’s Oxford detectives feature in a story devised by former Morse TV writer Alma Cullen, adapted by Richard Stoneman.

I also believe Anton Lesser is also starring in the drama with Neil Pearson as Morse.

I will of course record it and post it here on my blog for all to hear. I will hope to have it uploaded sometime on Saturday night.

Until then thank you all for your continued support and set your alarm clocks for Saturday. 🙂

  1. With advances in CGI , it is a shame that other Morse screenplays that did not get to be filmed originally, could be done.

It would be John Thaw playing Morse in effect!

With the right voice artist, we could be transported back to any era from 1987 on.

Seeing how successful the originals were being broadcast across the world, this could breathe new life into something we thought was ended in 2002.

    1. Sorry, but a zombie-like CGI John Thaw solving cases sounds a ghastly idea. A Hollywood budget couldn’t convincingly recreate young Carrie Fisher for Rogue One after all. Just let John Thaw’s wonderful body of work stand as it is without graverobbing his image.

      1. In the same way of thinking, having someone who doesn’t sound like John Thaw really makes the production less enjoyable surely?

  2. Thank you Chris, I shall set an event in my calendar to listen. I assume it will be Radio 4? Have a good week.

  3. Of course, I should have remembered that the drama is always at 2.30 on Saturday afternoon. At least this will be one that I can truly look forward to. Thanks Peter!

    1. Barnaby is played by Neil Dudgeon. It’s Neil Pearson playing Morse in this radio play.

  4. Thank you Chris for the radio drama heads-up. I’ll be back in a day or two for a listen.

  5. It was pretty good. Though I found it interesting that it was apparently “based on characters created by Colin Dexter” and not on a Morse novel itself, which I thought it was going in. That said, even Colin Dexter wrote/approved of Morse (and later Lewis and Endeavour) episodes “based on characters created by Colin Dexter,” so I guess there’s not a real issue there.

    1. Any type of media that has a character from one of Colin’s novels would need to carry the phrase ‘based on characters created by Colin Dexter’ for legal reasons.
