‘In Love with Inspector Morse’: A Feminist View.

Hi Morsonians and welcome to my latest post.

A few weeks ago I was in Edinburgh doing one of my favourite pastimes, perusing second hand bookshops. As I walked down the aisle (well bookshops are a place of worship 😉 ) toward the top of the shop my eye rested on a tall pile (about 30 at least) of the magazine Feminist Review. I decided to go over and scan through the magazines hoping to find something on my favourite author Virginia Woolf. However, there on top of this white spined tower of magazines were the words ‘In love with Inspector Morse’. I literally laughed out loud at the surprise and good fortune of finding this particular issue.

So, on getting home I attempted to find the author, Lyn Thomas, of the article. It was easier than I thought and I thankfully found her email address. Back when this article was written, 1995, Lyn was a Senior Lecturer in French at the University of North London. She is now Professor of Cultural Studies (part-time) and Acting Director, Centre for Life History and Life Writing Research, September 2016-January 2017.

Professor Thomas answered my email a few days later and gave me permission to post the article here on my blog. If you read this Professor Thomas thank you very much for your kindness.

Feminist Review is a peer reviewed, interdisciplinary journal setting new agendas for feminism. Produced by a Collective, the journal is committed to exploring gender in its relationship to other axes of power including race, class and sexuality. Feminist Review is still going strong today and can be subscribed to by clicking here.

So, the article can be read by clicking on the link below which will open in your PDF (Portable Document Format) reader. Once opened it can be easily downloaded. Almost all PCs and laptops have a free PDF reader as standard. The best way to gauge whether you have a PDF reader on your PC or laptop is simply to click the link below. If you don’t have a PDF reader let me know via the contact link at the top of the blog and I will attempt to convert the article into whatever program you wish, e.g.. Word.

It is a very interesting and enjoyable article and certainly adds a new diminsion to the world of Inspector Morse. I hope you enjoy the article.

  1. Wow, what serendipity! An amazing find. I haven’t yet read every word of this, but there’s lots to discuss and debate. Funny to read the comments on Last Seen Wearing a day after the Scallywags discussed it. Thanks for sharing your discovery.

  2. P.S. I had the laugh when the focus group expressed almost-horror at the idea of a TV series starring Sgt. Lewis.

  3. Great find Chris – thanks for sharing and thanks to Professor Thomas for allowing you to post. I will read at a quieter time – lots to read. Best
