On the ‘Endeavour: The Inspector Morse Appreciation Society‘ Facebook page Sam Kavanagh asked about Morse’s eating habits and in that discussion Mark Gibert wrote, “Christopher – we need a blog post of scenes where Morse is seen eating”. So, Mark here is that post. Of course I had to scan all 33 episodes (close to 55 hours) very quickly but I think I managed to collect all the eating scenes contained within the Morse series. In the Promised Land episode Lewis does tell Morse he needs to collect his own food to cook it on the barbie but he is stopped before he collects anything.

How about a video of scenes where Morse consumes non-alcoholic beverages? (In which episode does he prefer orange juice over beer–although we don’t actually see him drink it–and why? 😉).
In “Second Time around” (at 29) Morse, seeing Lewis outside the police station with tea and sandwiches, asks him: “For me?” But what do you think Morse has eaten in the same episode before the kitchen scene (at 60) where he asks Lewis to help him “dry up”? 😉
Morse does say in that scene that the the dishes etc are an accumulation. So, what we saw him washing up was probably a week’s worth of dirty dishes, cutlery etc. I don’t remember seeing any pots or pans being washed so one has to assume that he had cold meals like sandwiches.
Exactly! And I won’t be surprised if the accumulation dates back to the previous series 😁 Now, what about Morse’s toothache in “The Last Enemy” which most probably prevented him from eating well, if at all? Despite the “extra sugar” in his coffee (as Lewis tells us), isn’t it also possible that the toothache was caused by the consumption of candy and chocolate, but when? (There’s an allusion to a Mars bar in the book of _The Remorseful Day_). In this episode, Morse tells Dr Russell that his mother insisted that he “have a proper breakfast”, but in the next scene we see him drink instead (“have” is not the equivalent of “eat” 😉).
Well, looking at Endeavour – the beautifully thin Shaun Evans – Morse has never eaten much. Another marvellously thought-through detail? 😉
I don’t think I’ve seen him eat anything! He walked in on Jim Strange and George Fancy having a Chinese but wouldn’t have any himself.

And when in _Service of all the Dead_ Morse asks Lewis if he fancies a beef burger, the latter replies that his ‘wife’ll have the chips on. . . . [it] was [for Morse] good to be reminded of Mrs Lewis’ chips’ (109).
Coincidentally, I bought the same set and also from a charity shop. I think it cost £4.
LOL cost me £5…either a better class of charity shop or I was “done”. Oh well all for a good cause.
Morse has clearly been eating toast and marmalade for breakfast in the episode The dead of Jericho which he hastily puts away when His boss Strange makes a surprise call.
I like what Dr Grayling Russell said in ‘The Secret of Bay 5B’ in The Lamb Inn, when they were taking lunch together on Saturday, near the end of the episode, ‘Don’t you ever eat Morse? ‘Oh this is pure food, he replied, whilst downing a pint of ale, ‘I suppose lesser mortals have tried but failed’, she says.
But what about how he takes his coffee? Black with sugar, with milk and sugar, black and I think he takes it with everything, at least once.
I recently got Britbox (I’m in Australia) and are swapping between Endeavour and Morse on a daily basis while recovering from surgery. I would watch Lewis as well if it wasn’t for that prat Hathaway. He drags the whole show down and I can’t help to think that the person who gave the role to Fox maybe are regretting that choice.

I don’t agree with many of Laurence Fox’s political views but I have to completely disagree with you regarding the Hathaway character and Laurence Fox’s playing of the part. Hathaway is a great character excellently played by Laurence Fox.

That was a fun post. Coincidentally, I said to my husband yesterday that we never seem to see Endeavour or the later Morse eating, shopping, or doing laundry!
Off the top of my head, I can remember Morse:
1: Eating one of Jennifer Coleby’s homemade cookies in ‘Last Bus To Woodstock’
2: Getting Lewis to help him with the washing up (‘Second Time Around’, I think) and
3: Pushing a trolley through the supermarket, Lewis helping him find things (can’t remember which episode)
Not much though for 33 episodes, I agree
I’ve paused rewatching Morse as I’m now working my way through Endeavour (having missed it the first time). I’m glad he does occasionally have sustenance!
Anybody remember the name of the Morse episode where we see Strange’s secret stash of choccie biscuits in his drawer?
