The Pubs and their Locations of Inspector Morse, Part Two

This is the second part of my attempt to identify all the pubs that Morse visited during the 33 episode series. This post includes episodes 11 (The Secret of Bay 5b) to episode 20 (Promised Land).

The following information will be included in each detail about the Morse episodes:

1) Time – This relates to the hour, minute and second that Morse is shown in the pub.

2) Pub – Name of pub and it’s address followed by a picture from the episode.

3) Pub today – This will be a photo of the pub as up-to-date as possible.

4) Location – This will be a map of pub’s location. Click on maps to get a larger view.

5) Info – This will be additional information relating to the pub, location or anything else of relevance.

Info – Well this took a bit of detective work to locate this pub. I could find no info about the location of this pub anywhere on the interweb so a bit of sleuthing was going to be necessary. Firstly, there is a very short scene outside the pub so watching that several times was necessary. (see scene below)

It was obvious it was on the banks of a river or canal but of course that doesn’t make it easier. Secondly behind Lewis can be seen industrial buildings. See picture below,

serpent buiuldings

Again not really helpful on its own. However, behind Morse in the same scene there is a sign, ‘Cooper Signs and Coachworks’.

serpent1stpuboldbargecoopersign

This is and was more helpful. So after some research I found that the company was under a different name but was near a river, the River Lea. So using Google earth and street view I searched along the banks of the river and found The Old Barge. On the photo above under ‘Pub Today’ you can see the buildings in the background that are behind the photo of Lewis above. Also viewing the scene above shows the same building apart from a couple of differences that will occur over twenty plus years. I am sure you will agree that this is the pub.

      1. Hi Ellis. Thanks for writing with your suggestion. However, i’m afraid it’s not The Three Horseshoes’. The location of that pub is too rural for the pub location in Fat Chance. If you watch the episode again you will see that the pub location in Fat Chance is more urban at least village wise. Thank you again for taking the time to write. Take care.

  1. First, Thank you! It’s good to know the names and locations of so many of the “Morse” pubs. Second, with respect to the “Forge”, as you call it, pub used in “Who killed Harry Field”, I myself have tried in vain, via google, to locate it. If I ever (unlikely) run into Geraldine James it would be the first thing I would ask her, at least after introducing myself. Hopefully she would remember.

    All the best, Gregg

  2. Found it!! The “Forge” pub is now the Auberge du Lac.

    Website: http://www.thecriticalcouple.com/the-food-blog/auberge-du-lac-hertfordshires-star

It’s clearly the same building… scan down to photo of the front.

The “pub” seemed to be the same brick style as the mansion in that episode so I checked imdb.com for the location of the mansion and used google earth to survey the nearby countryside and saw it almost immediately.

    All the best, Gregg

    1. Hi Gregg. Fantastic bit of detective work. I have as you may notice written a post on your find. Thank you for taking the time to not only find the pub but to write and let me know. A huge thank you Gregg.

      1. Hello Chris.. Thank you for doing the detective work on all the others. It’s good to know where they are and I hope to manage a pint or at least a brief visit to each one at some point. Regarding the one I found, I just suddenly got lucky with a minor “brain wave”. I must admit I had wondered about it on and off for years and it is good to finally know where it is. All the best… and Cheers…. Gregg

  3. Fantastic page well done and very well laid out
I tried to find out all the pubs and locations etc for my now sadly off line website “morse mania ” and it’s not easy

  4. And all the time the answer was staring us in the face: The Auberge du Lac is in the same map as The Crooked Chimney. It’s only half a mile away.

  5. The unknown pub in Fat Chance was the Blue Anchor in Fishpool St. St. Albans, Hertfordshire. The scene was shot in the rear garden. Sadly, this pub is no longer in business and due to be converted into flats.

    1. Hi Neil. I believe you are right that I misidentified the pub. I have updated the post. Thanks Neil.

  6. Well done big Morse fan coming to UK in Sept. a few days in Oxford because o Morse will be tipping a few in his Pubs Thanks Again

  7. The Blue Anchor is now a resturant so you Can still sit in that garden in St Albans Herts

  8. The unknown pub in Secret of Bay 5b? Could the outside sots at night be the Greenwood Hotel, Northolt. UB5

  9. Hello

Just noticed a sad post about the pub that was used as a location in the episode “SINS OF THE FATHERS”:

St Albans: England’s ‘oldest pub’ Ye Olde Fighting Cocks closes

    https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-beds-bucks-herts-60270775

“A pub reputed to be the oldest in England has closed after its licensee’s firm went into administration.

Christo Tofalli, who runs Ye Olde Fighting Cocks in St Albans, Herts, said the move came after “challenging” trading conditions due to Covid-19…would reopen under new management”

  10. Secrets of Bay5B, unknown pub. Looks like the Randolph in Oxford. What is now the “Morse Bar” or something like that. Used to be the “Chapter Bar” or “Chapters Bar”, I think.

    1. Hi Charlie and welcome to my website. It’s 100% not the Morse Bar. I’ve been to the Randolph and the bar many times. Thank you anyway.
